One of the joys of the Smoky Mountains are the local natural wonders. From a simple hike down the road from your vacation home, or a more adventurous day-long hike in the Cataloochee area of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, there are great hikes here for everyone. Did you know that the Smoky Mountain National Park has some of the last remaining stands of old growth trees on the Eastern Seaboard?

While you may not want the full experience of white-water rafting, you can consider canoeing some of North Carolina's rivers and lakes. The American Canoe Association (ACA) is pushing a proposal to make sure some of its brethren are never tamed like the Nantahala , however wild a ride it might offer when the waters are flowing. Seven North Carolina rivers are recommended for Wild and Scenic River designation. Thanks to the ACA for providing us with a rundown on these rivers!

Summer months can be a bit warm, even in the altitudes of the Maggie Valley area. What better diversion than spend a few hours floating down a local white water rafting river, getting splashed with 50-degree water. We have listed a few of the local outfitters who specialize in these thrill rides.

When was the last time you rode that horse or the pony at the country fair? And if hiking the North Carolina Appalachian Trail is not on the agenda for today's activity, then maybe a leisurely horseback adventure at the Cataloochee Ranch or other local outfitter may interest you. The Maggie Valley Great Smokey Mountain area has several local horseback riding sources, just minutes away from your vacation home.

Fishing has been a part of the historic use of Great Smoky Mountains National Park since its creation. Great Smoky Mountains National Park Fishing. Another fishing source can be found at Trout Unlimited. The native brook trout was originally present in most streams above 2000 feet elevation. Extensive logging operations in the early 1900's caused contamination of over 160 miles of clear mountain streams eliminating the brook trout from about 50% of its original range. Most of the streams in the area are home of the native Brook Trout and have been supplemented by the Brown and Rainbow trout.

Great places to golf! Over 108 holes. You'll find golfing in the Maggie Valley area to be a favorite among golfers. Lush rolling fairways are surrounded by endless mountain vistas and spectacular scenery. Haywood County is also the home of six beautiful golf courses designed to enhance the spectacular views of our majestic mountains from every fairway - Maggie Valley Country Club (18 holes), Waynesville Country Club (27 holes), Springdale Country Club (18 holes), Laurel Ridge Country Club (18 holes), Lake Junaluska Golf Course (18 holes) and the Irontree Golf Course (9 holes). Maggie Valley Resorts Mountains National Golf Course has been rated "One Of America's Best" by GOLFWEEK and a "Top 50 Southern Resort Course" by the Southern Living Travel Guide, one of only six courses so rated in North Carolina.

If you are fortunate to be visiting us during the winter months, there will always be a few in your group who want to take advantage of our winter sports activities. Just Minutes away from your Maggie Valley North Carolina vacation cabin, you'll find the Cataloochee Ski Resort. And if skiing or snow boarding is a little too adventurous for some of the group, you should check out the local "snow tubing" at Tony's Tube World. Great fun for those who want to experience snow for the first time…or relive those childhood times of sledding when you "lived up North".

At the local Gem Mine, you can "mine" a flume line. Some "Mines" also have gemstone ore to screen thru to find your own precious gems. If you want to mine the old way, you can actually get into the river at some "Mines" and use pans, sluice boxes, or even a dredge. Come and enjoy the learning experience of working with experienced miners and prospectors. This can be a fun outing for the entire family!

The Great Smoky Mountains offers many opportunities for rock climbing and rappelling. The Great Smokies is truly a paradise for the outdoor adventurer. Here in the oldest mountains in the world, outdoor enthusiasts revel on endless trails in our national forest, national park and wilderness areas.

The Nantahala National Forest lies in the mountains and valleys of western North Carolina between Waynesville and Murphy. Elevations in the NNF range from a high of 5,800 feet at Lone Bald in Jackson County to a low of 1,200 feet along the Tusquittee River in Cherokee County. Check out Whiteside Mountain, named for its sheer, white cliffs. This mountain rises more than 2,100 feet above the Nantahala National Forest. A national recreation trail, making a 2-mile loop, winds to the 4,930-foot summit.

Nature trails, parks and scenic roadways abound in Western North Carolina. Walk the Appalachian Trail; explore the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, Nantahala National Forest, or Pisgah National Forest; or drive the Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherohala Skyway, or Mountain Waters Scenic Byway. There is fun for everyone in Western NC.

Check out the Wheels Through Time Museum motorcyle musuem that's just done the road. Take a trip through time and admire old and classic motorcylces from all eras.
